You don’t need to worry about tracking licenses. If you're up to date on my account, your licenses are up to date as well.
You don’t need to meet with capacity planners. Since you're not moving into the corporate data center, you don’t need to worry about disk space, networking, load balancing etc. That’s all taken care of by your provider.
You don’t have to purchase or design a backup solution. You do need to check to see how my provider handles backups and make sure it’s configured the way I want. It’s also probably worth having them restore something as a test.
Failover is part of the configuration not an expensive part of your budget. You may have to add a little to your monthly fee to get the type of failover you’d like, but it will be a lot less expensive than then purchasing and configuring a cluster that would perform a failover in my own datacenter.
You don’t have to purchase any physical servers, and therefore you don’t have to wait for finance to approve them or wait for them to come from the vendor.
If you need a new database or an email server or whatever you can think of, I just whip out my corporate card and charge it! No going through a software approval process or any of the other processes mentioned earlier in this list.
Security. I know that the impression is that the cloud isn’t secure, but who are you going to trust? Your corporate IT guy that reviews security every once in a while or a company like Google that has invested billions in making sure your cloud app is secure. It’s food for thought.
No longer are you and I responsible for the applying patches in the middle of the night. I can’t tell you the number of times in my career I’ve sat in front of the computer in the middle of the night hoping that a software patch would work, and then when it didn’t spend the rest of the night backing it out. No more!!!
It’s way easier to budget. I have had several managers comment on how easy it is to budget for a project now that they use the cloud. Instead of asking finance for a million dollars to setup a project, they are asking for approval for $1200 a month on a corporate credit card (your mileage may vary).
Cost. I know budget and cost are similar, but the overall cost of ownership is so much less with cloud computing I just had to mention it separately. I’ve a had a few clients comment that it will cost as much to deploy to the cloud as it would be to create the application internally. And that COULD be true BUT where the cost savings will come into play will be when your due for an upgrade. Where you’d normally be go through the who development/deploy/networking/backup/software licensing process again your vendor is stealthly upgrading you all the time. Now that’s what I call awesome!
